How Class Action Lawsuits Work
A class action means a large group of people (a class) is bringing a lawsuit in court.
When people join together to fight a large company they find there is more strength and more likelihood of success than when they fight alone. Many times the cost of fighting a large company is too expensive for an individual. That’s why class action suits were developed. Many people join together to fight for justice with a lawyer who has the power of a large group of wronged people behind him.
An attorney represents the large group of people in court to right an injustice. Whether it’s because a worker is not getting paid what they are rightfully owed or a consumer is ripped off, class actions can help many people at one time.
Lawsuits By the People, For the People
Even if a person only has a small loss or damage, they can rely on the larger group of people who are also damaged to bring a lawsuit. So, for example, if you’ve been ripped off for $5 you can join a larger group of people who have been ripped off in the same way. Together, your total losses or damages are a large amount of money. Corporations take this money for themselves if someone doesn’t stand up and do something about it. That’s why lawsuits by the people, for the people, were created in our courts.
